To ensure the most efficient water management, EDL-Generation Public Company (EDL-Gen) has carried out water management measures to maintain the operational balance of Nam Khan 2 and Nam Khan 3 Hydropower Plants during the rainy season.
In order to manage water effectively and safely, and in line with the current water volume, the projects have discharged water through the spillway gates at an appropriate and controllable level. This is part of normal technical standard operations. The details are as follows:
Nam Khan 2 Hydropower Plant:
Water discharge adjustment began by opening four spillway gates, namely Gate No. 1, 2, 3, and 4, on 6 July 2026 at 09:00 AM. Each gate was opened to a height of 50 centimeters, equivalent to 270.42 cubic meters per second. Together with the water flow passing through the turbines at 46.25 cubic meters per second, the total water released through Nam Khan 2 Hydropower Plant was 316.67 cubic meters per second.
Nam Khan 3 Hydropower Plant:
The spillway gates were opened at 18:00 on 5 August 2026, with three gates, namely Gate No. 1, 2, and 3, opened to a height of 20 centimeters. The gates were further opened on 6 August 2026 at 09:00 AM, with each gate opened to a height of 50 centimeters, equivalent to 239.79 cubic meters per second. Together with the water flow passing through the turbines at 181.54 cubic meters per second, the total water released through Nam Khan 3 Hydropower Plant was 421.33 cubic meters per second.
The above operations are part of the safe water management plan in accordance with technical standards, regulations, and relevant laws of the Lao PDR at every stage. Nevertheless, Nam Khan 2–3 Hydropower Plants have informed the local administrative authorities at each level so that residents can prepare and closely monitor the situation.
This is especially important for people living in Xieng Ngeun District, Luang Prabang Province, and nearby villages located along the Nam Khan River, so that they are aware of possible changes in water levels, which may increase slightly.
Additional information: Nam Khan 3 Hydropower Plant is located on the Nam Khan River, which is approximately 253 kilometers long and flows through Houaphanh, Xieng Khouang, and Luang Prabang Provinces
