The water level in Nam Ngum reservoir increases due to continuously heavy rainfalls
During the past July 2018, quantity of the inflow in Nam Ngum reservoir increased. All this caused by the continuous rainfalls in last following days, which raises the water level up gradually. Plus, the announcement from Nam Ngum 2 Hydropower Company Limited on the 28th July 2018 informing that water in reservoir will be released to control the inflow in this rainy season.
The water will be released through its spillway from Nam Ngum 2 reservoir to Nam Ngum-1 reservoir during the 1st August to the 30th September 2018. The quantity of the water released is 50-150 million cubic meters, which will raise the water in downstream of Nam Ngum 2 HPP and Nam Ngum 1 HPP including along Nam Ngum river from the 1st august 2018 onward.The water level in the Nam Ngum-1 basin measured today, 2nd August 2018, is at 208,97m above the sea level (MASL) and the estimated inflow is 819,17m3/s. In addition to minimize the impacts on the environment and population living in downstream area of Nam Ngum-1 HPP during the releasing water through spillways between the 30th July and the 3rd August 2018, the environment & Social specialist team from the Nam Ngum-1 and Nam Mang 3 have collected data of 15 villages in Vientiane Province, that settle along Nam Ngum river, which will be at the high risk to be flooded if we open the spillways of the dam. All of this work concerned is to ensure that the population in this area is well informed and receive reliable facts. Furthermore, to make sure that the villagers are aware and prepared to evacuate their domestics and assets in time when release the water through spillways’ announcement is informed.
