The water level at Nam Khan 2-3 HPPs is still remains controllable

Committee in charge of Nam Khan 2-3 hydropower plants (HPP) had noticed to all sectors in LuangPrabang city and Xieng Ngeun district, Luang Prabang province is aware that since the 20^th July 2018 the water has been released via the spillway of Nam Khan 3 HPP.

Thus, we had announced to all related authorities and to the people who live along Nam Khan river to be alerted and well prepared for any possible flood event that could be happening during the release of water from the spillway which will lead to the increased water level in the trail water of Nam Khan 3 HPP and the downstream area. The water will be:

• Released via the spillway in an amount of 600-700m³ per second
• Released via the turbine in an amount of 85m³ per second

The water flowed in the downstream area of Nam Khan 3 dam will be 685-785m³ per second in total. Accordingly, the change of the water level in the downstream area that raised from the normal level 306metres above the sea level to 312metres above the sea level will increase the water level in the downstream area of Nam Khan 3 HPP to 3-6metres (This water level is not in danger zone). It is still considered as SAFE and similar to the last rainy season.  Thus, the release of water is to secure the environment and social safety especially the communities living along Khan River is safe.

Therefore, this notice is applied based on the notice No. 0818/ກອຕທ, from department of meteorology and hydrology Lao, Vientiane Capital on the 24^th July 2018 and based on daily measurement of the water level that continuously grows which increase the amount of water in reservoir of the Nam Khan 3 HPP. However, this is to control the water level in the reservoir and the level at the downstream area, to remain in the safety level and controllable. In addition, to prevent the flood from the continuous rain.

Nam Khan 3 HPP is located in between Ban Donmoh and Ban Khonwai, Xieng Ngeun district, Luang Prabang Province. The plant is in the South East 24 km away from Luang Prabang city following the 13rd North Road. Nam Khan 3 hydropower (60MW) is able to produce 240.8 GWh per year. The Nam Khan 2 hydropower plant is 48km away from the Nam Khan 3 plant in Xieng Nguen district, Luang Prabang province, located in 400km in the north of Vientiane Capital and 80km from Luangprabang city.
